Kabongo Out 23 Games

The NCAA announced Friday that it has amended Myck Kabongo's suspension to 23 games, with credit for the 11 games that the Texas point guard has already missed.

The announcement comes a few days after Kabongo was originally deemed ineligible for the entire season, and after the Longhorns filed an appeal to that ruling. Kabongo was deemed to have accepted impermissible benefits and giving false statements over the course of the investigation.

Kabongo's first eligible game will be on Feb. 13, when Texas hosts Iowa State. That's the Longhorns' 11th conference came of the 2012-2013 season.

Without Kabongo, Texas is 7-4, with freshman point guard Javan Felix leading the team in minutes per game (35.2), and assists per game (6.0). Felix has also taken the second-most field goal attempts on the squad and is third in scoring (8.6). The added strain from the time played can be seen at times, with Felix shooting just .313 from the field and committing nearly four turnovers per game.

Kabongo averaged 9.6 points and 5.2 assists in 30.6 minutes per game as a freshman last year, and many thought he would emerge as the Longhorns' go-to player and leader this season. With Kabongo returning, Texas coach Rick Barnes said he initially planned to play Felix just 15 minutes per contest.

Kabongo must also repay $475 for the benefits.
