The Halfway Point in Hoops

Posted Jan 12, 2002

After all of the non conference games, pre season basketball tournaments and lopsided matchups it is time to get down to the truth. The Conference Season kicks into full gear as teams battle for the top slots as they look towards the ultimate prize of heading to Lawlor and raising the State Trophy in February.

Sunrise So far it looks like we have the 3 teams slotted to go to State already crowned. Las Vegas, which with only 2 losses is playing great basketball. Green Valley, they have come around and found the stablity at the Point Guard that they were missing. Desert Pines, has the athletes to play with Cheyenne and any one else. They struggle with size. Valley has been a disapointment. Chap is terrible. Silverado still struggles to win the easy games. Foothill appears to be over achieving. Basic, well they are still Basic. Eldorado, some one needs to awaken the sleeping giant. Sunset Gorman still is the team to beat. They are fundementally sound and have not lost a game to a in State opponent. Cheyenne has the athletes but still remains vulnerable. Cimarron has a great one two punch in scoring that is very good. Centennial has suprised and appears to be looking around wondering how they got this far so fast. Palo Verde, the jury remains out if they are real. Mojave is the sleeper that gets hot and scares teams. Clark has the athletes but once again no size. North Reed is off to a hot start, they have had tough games of late with a big contest against Elko this weekend. Elko, has their football players back in basketball shape now and they are hot. Hug looks like they could cool down real soon against Reno. Reno streaky team, has the best big man in the State and could be a scary team in one year! McQueen is getting solid points from JJ Myatt after sitting out football season. This year the North gets only 2 spots in the final 8 at State. Many North Coaches are greatful for the down year, as this is not a strong group of Northern teams. The South is set in the Sunrise with very little changing the standings. The Sunset has 2 solid teams and a battle for number 3 that will go down to the very end. We have a long way to go til President's Weekend. When the playoffs slots for State will be decided.
