Ford Headed to UNLV

Posted Feb 5, 2002

Foothill High RB John Ford was listed as one of the Top 100 High School Football Players in the Nation by ESPN's Tom Lemming. His play this season did not disappoint as he led the Falcons to the State Semi Final. He provided an oral commitment to UNLV in the Summer and then started to look around during the Fall. Here are his comments to us on FOX 5 last Friday Night.

The recruting battle for John Ford of Foothill High School star appears to be over. There is some question about his ability to make the necessary test scores to qualify for UNLV. We had a chance to talk to him during the FOX 5 News this past Friday night about the process.

Q - Why are you headed to UNLV when they have recruited other backs and have a bunch of talent returning?

A - So, I am better than them.

Q - What happened to the reports on Washington and Oregon recruiting you? Have you taken any visits?

A - Neither will allow me to take a visit without test scores. I have not taken the ACT or SAT tests yet.

Q - You have a pretty solid family base that has taken you in? Was staying home a big reason why UNLV got you?

A - I like John Robinson and my Cousin and friends have been great to me. There has been alot of people who have helped me. I just felt comfortable.

Q - You visited USC?

A - Yes. Still like UNLV.

In discussions with sources, Ford is being tutored right now to prepare for the test. It is suprising that this is still happenning, when he could take the tests as many times as he wishes and many standard students are doing just that right now. Ford ran for over 2,000 yards and 30 touchdowns for Foothill. He was selected to play in the Army All Star Game in San Antonio this year.

Ford would have plenty of competition at UNLV between last year starter Joe Haro, Dominique Dorsey, WSU transfer Deon Burnett, Arizona transfer Larry Crooms and Gorman star Dyonte Perkins who redshirted this past season. UNLV has already commitments from 3 other running backs headed into the signing day.

If Ford can get the test score, he has the chance to be an instant impact RB at 6'2 210 pounds. The kid likes to run between the tackles and can get stronger to carry the ball 25 times per game at the college level.
