LOI Signing Day - Cornell Johnson has teams wait

Posted Feb 5, 2002

Cornell Johnson, the big prospect in Nevada this year, will be taking his ACT test again this weekend. His test score will have a bearing on where he goes next year. PAC Ten teams (USC, UCLA), Oklahoma, Oregon State and now UNLV are waiting on the stud running back. This wait may end up costing the RB the better opportunities and UNLV would luck out on a gold mine player. Here is the rest of the players who made announcements today on where they are headed.

Cornell Johnson - DP - He will announce after he gets his test scores where he will be headed to. UNLV has entered the picture now on him, due to their willingness to stick with him on the test score issue. For a school like UNLV, sticking with star players who are test score question marks, allows them the chance to land kids that they normally could not land. UCLA is on the fringe and the change in Coaching staff was not a favorable move. Sources say that Johnson may now want to be closer to home and not go far away, which lends itself to UNLV and the PAC Ten schools. Oregon State is still sticking around trying to convince him that he will get playing time in Corvallis as a freshman. He wants to make an impact right away and worries that Steven Jackson may not turn pro after this year as many expect. UNLV with a host of running backs would have some decisions to make on where to place their transfers Deon Burnett and importantly Larry Croom. Johnson would give them a big back in the mold of Kevin Brown - the WSU transfer two years ago. Recent signees inlcude: Anthony Scott - GV - He will go to Boise State. This makes the 3rd Nevada player to sign with Boise this year. Cavender twins from Elko earlier committed to the Broncos. Devin Patterson - Centennial and Kawon Walker - DP - are headed to Northern Arizona. Chad Pool of LV - Heads to Idaho - look for him to convert to safety. Daniel Crews - LV - Colorado State - chose Rams over UNLV Michael Kravetz - Durango and Brandyn Dowrowksi - GV - both 300 pounders head to SDSU Note Northern players and their choices are in the earlier article. Matt Warner of McQueen is expected to announce if he is headed to BYU after they took away the ride offer and only invited him to walk on or Nevada. DP will send 6 players to Eastern Arizona JC, two players Marcel Johnson and Lee Dorsey could be Division 2 bound when we talked to DP earlier today.
